About Halfpenny Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School
Halfpenny Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School in Wakefield has just received its first ever Outstanding rating from Ofsted, following a graded inspection in May 2025. The school was previously rated Good in 2019, and the new report marks a clear step up across the board. Inspectors judged every assessable category as Outstanding, including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and early years provision. The school’s leadership and management were also rated Outstanding. This is no small achievement in a local authority where only 16 out of 113 primary schools hold the top grade. The most telling exam metric comes from Key Stage 2 results for the 2023/24 academic year: 88% of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, well above the Wakefield local authority average of 64%. That places Halfpenny Lane 8th out of 97 primary schools in the area, putting it comfortably in the top 10% locally.
Digging deeper into the 2023/24 KS2 results, the school’s performance is consistently strong across the three core subjects. In reading, 95% of pupils reached the expected standard and 63% achieved the higher standard, with an average scaled score of 112. Maths saw 93% at the expected level and 58% at the higher level, with an average score of 110. Writing was slightly lower but still robust, with 92% meeting expectations and 35% reaching the higher standard. The school ranks 38th out of 1,506 primary schools in Yorkshire and the Humber, and 473rd nationally out of 13,686 — putting it in the top 3.5% of all primary schools in England. Parent feedback is overwhelmingly positive too: 88% of respondents would recommend the school, and 82% strongly agreed that their child is happy there. The Parent View survey, covering September 2024 to September 2025, also showed strong agreement on safety, behaviour, and high expectations.

The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
