About Thornton Hough Primary School
Thornton Hough Primary School sits at the very top of the Wirral primary school rankings, placing first out of 64 schools in the local authority. Its ranking score of 96 puts it comfortably ahead of the nearest peers — Our Lady of Pity Catholic Primary and Nursery School (81), Poulton Lancelyn Primary School (80) and West Kirby Primary School (79). Nationally, the school ranks 70th out of nearly 14,000 primaries, placing it in the top 0.5 per cent of schools across the country. It is one of only six schools in Wirral to hold an Outstanding rating from Ofsted, and the nearest similarly rated school, Brackenwood Infant School, is nearly four kilometres away. Headteacher William Lowe leads a school that is noticeably oversubscribed: for the 2025/26 intake, 86 families applied for just 27 places, with 32 of those applications listing Thornton Hough as their first preference.
Academically, the school’s performance at Key Stage 2 is exceptional. In the 2023/24 assessments, 96 per cent of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared with a Wirral local authority average of 53 per cent. Every single pupil met the expected standard in both reading and maths, and 100 per cent did so in maths alone. At the higher standard, 35 per cent achieved the top scores across all three subjects, with 58 per cent hitting the higher bar in maths, 54 per cent in reading and 38 per cent in writing. Average scaled scores of 110 in both reading and maths are well above the national benchmark of 100. Ofsted’s most recent inspection, in February 2024, awarded the top grade of Outstanding across every category except early years provision, which was rated Good. The previous inspection, in 2011, also judged the school Outstanding overall.
The school is housed in a building that includes a gymnasium, sports hall, library and chapel, and it runs a Forest School programme. Sports on offer include gymnastics, tennis, athletics and cross country, while extracurricular clubs range from art and chess to drama, film and eco club. The school’s SEND provision covers specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, speech, language and communication needs, and autistic spectrum disorder. With 179 pupils on roll against a capacity of 175, the school is effectively full, and just 5.6 per cent of pupils are eligible for free school meals — well below the national average. This is a school that suits families who place a high priority on academic outcomes and who are prepared to compete for a place in a heavily oversubscribed setting, particularly those living within the Wirral area.

Catchment & Local Competition
No catchment data published for this school
The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
