About St Thomas' CofE Primary School

St Thomas' CofE Primary School in Kensington and Chelsea received an Outstanding rating in its most recent Ofsted inspection in January 2025, with every graded category — quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision — all judged Outstanding. That’s a clean sweep, and it matches the school’s previous Outstanding grade from 2014. On the most telling exam metric for a primary, the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined was 64 per cent. That sits below the local authority average of 72 per cent, and it places the school 18th out of 25 primary schools in Kensington and Chelsea. The picture is more mixed when you look at individual subjects: 84 per cent of pupils hit the expected standard in reading, and 80 per cent did so in maths, but writing lagged at 72 per cent. At the higher standard, reading stood out with 52 per cent of pupils achieving it, while maths and writing both sat at 12 per cent.

The school’s average scores in reading (109) and maths (105) are solid, and the proportion of pupils reaching the higher standard in reading is notably strong. But the combined expected figure of 64 per cent suggests that writing is the subject holding the school back relative to its LA peers. Ofsted’s inspection report, published in February 2025, clearly didn’t see this as a weakness worth downgrading the school for — the quality of education was still rated Outstanding. The school is small, with 197 pupils against a capacity of 236, and it has a high proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals at 54.1 per cent. Parent views, collected between September 2024 and September 2025, show strong overall satisfaction: 84 per cent of the 44 respondents would recommend the school. However, the SEND support question drew a notably negative response, with 42 per cent strongly disagreeing that the school gives SEND children the support they need.

The school is heavily oversubscribed: for 2025/26 entry, it received 48 applications for just 15 places, a ratio of 3.2 to one, and only 10 first-preference offers were made. That tells you demand is high, despite the mixed exam results. Facilities include a forest school, sensory room, chapel, art studios and music rooms, and the school runs clubs in chess, coding and book club. Sports on offer include athletics, cricket, tennis, netball, gymnastics and dance. The school has a nursery provision and caters for children from age three. SEND provisions cover a wide range of needs, including autistic spectrum disorder, speech and language communication needs, and social, emotional and mental health support. This is a Church of England primary with a strong Ofsted record and a clear community feel, but parents of children with SEND should investigate the support on offer carefully before applying.
