About St Stephen's Primary School

St Stephen's Primary School in Newham is a large state primary running very close to full capacity, with 623 pupils on roll against a school capacity of 630. The proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals stands at 32.9%, which is significantly above the national average and reflects the diverse, inner-city community the school serves. Demand for places is exceptionally high: for the 2025/26 intake, the school received 343 applications for just 89 places, an oversubscription ratio of 3.85 to one. Of those applications, 142 were first-preference choices, and only 88 first-preference offers were made, giving a clear signal that this is one of the most sought-after primaries in the borough. The school is led by headteacher Neena Lall OBE, who has steered it to an Outstanding rating from Ofsted in its most recent graded inspection in 2023, a grade it has held consistently across both its recent inspections.

Academically, St Stephen's delivers results that place it among the strongest primaries in Newham and well above the local authority average. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 assessments, 88% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared with a Newham LA average of 74%. The school ranks 8th out of 61 primaries in the borough and sits in the top 5% nationally for this combined measure. In maths, 99% of pupils met the expected standard and 51% reached the higher standard, with an average scaled score of 110. Reading saw 93% at expected and 38% at the higher level, with an average score of 107. Writing also performed strongly, with 92% at expected and 51% at the higher standard. Ofsted awarded Outstanding grades across all categories in its 2023 inspection, including quality of education, personal development, behaviour and attitudes, and early years provision.

The school offers a strong range of facilities including a sports hall, gymnasium, music rooms, sensory room, ICT suite and an outdoor playground, plus a chapel. Sports provision covers athletics, rounders, tennis, dance, cricket, gymnastics and cross country, and there are clubs for drama, choir and gardening. SEND support is comprehensive, with provisions for autistic spectrum disorder, speech, language and communication needs, hearing impairment, physical disability, social and emotional mental health needs, dyslexia and multi-sensory impairment. Parent satisfaction is extremely high: in the most recent Parent View survey, 100% of respondents would recommend the school, and 100% strongly agreed that their child is happy there. Given its outstanding Ofsted record, strong academic outcomes and intense competition for places, St Stephen's is best suited to families who live close enough to secure a place and who value a high-performing, inclusive community primary with a broad extracurricular offer.
