About St Luke's Primary School
Ofsted's Parent View survey, based on 249 responses collected between September 2024 and September 2025, shows that 90% of parents would recommend St Luke's Primary School to other families. That's a strong vote of confidence, and it's backed up by the detail: 92% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed that their child is happy at the school, and 91% felt the same about their child feeling safe. The school is clearly popular locally, too. For the 2025/26 academic year, St Luke's received 209 applications for 90 places, making it oversubscribed by a ratio of 2.32 to one. Of those, 95 were first-preference applications, and 86 first-preference offers were made. So while it's not impossible to get a place, it's competitive, and putting it top of your list certainly helps. The school is led by headteacher Simon Wattam and has a current roll of 625 pupils, just five short of its full capacity of 630.
Academically, St Luke's performs solidly above the local average. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 results, 66% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared with a Brighton and Hove average of 59%. That places the school 14th out of 40 primaries in the local authority, and 12th when ranked by its overall score. In reading, 84% met the expected standard and 47% reached the higher standard, with an average scaled score of 109. Maths saw 72% at the expected level and 32% at the higher level, with an average score of 105. Writing was similar, with 83% reaching the expected standard and 17% achieving greater depth. The school's most recent Ofsted inspection, in March 2025, rated it Good overall, with Outstanding marks for early years provision and personal development. Behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and the quality of education were all judged Good.
St Luke's is a non-denominational state primary for mixed-gender pupils aged 4 to 11, with no nursery or sixth form. The school offers a broad set of facilities including a library, sports hall, forest school area, sensory room, art studios and a chapel. Sports on offer include football, dance, athletics, cricket, tennis and cross country, while clubs range from science and coding to gardening and eco club. The school's SEND provisions cover a wide spectrum, including support for autistic spectrum disorder, speech and language needs, social and emotional mental health, visual impairment and physical disability. The Parent View data suggests that while 69% of respondents felt SEND children receive the support they need, 32% disagreed or strongly disagreed, so it's worth discussing specific needs with the school directly. With 18.7% of pupils eligible for free school meals, the school serves a broadly representative intake. This is a well-regarded, oversubscribed school that suits families who value strong pastoral care and a good academic track record.
