About St James the Great Church of England Primary School
St James the Great Church of England Primary School in Colchester is a state primary that, on its headline academic metrics, sits notably below the Essex local authority average. In the most recent Key Stage 2 assessments, only 40% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared with a local authority average of 62%. That 22-percentage-point gap is significant and places the school in the bottom half of primary schools within Colchester, ranked 46th out of 51. Nationally, it falls in the bottom 10% of all primary schools on this measure. The school is oversubscribed, however, receiving 84 applications for 35 places in the 2025/26 admissions round, with 28 first-preference offers made. This suggests that despite the academic results, local demand remains strong, possibly driven by its Church of England character, nursery provision for children aged two and above, or its location within the community.
Looking more closely at the breakdown of Key Stage 2 results, the picture is mixed. In reading, 60% of pupils met the expected standard and 25% reached the higher standard, with an average score of 103. In writing, 67% met the expected standard, though only 5% achieved the higher mark. Maths was weaker, with just 45% at the expected level and 13% at the higher standard, and an average score of 100. Progress scores are not available in the data, so it is not possible to say how much value the school adds relative to pupils' starting points. Ofsted inspected the school in January 2025 and rated it Good overall, with all categories including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision all judged Good. This is a significant improvement from the previous graded inspection in 2019, when the school was rated Inadequate, and the most recent ungraded inspection confirmed that standards have been maintained.
The school offers a range of facilities including an ICT suite, playing fields, a sensory room, art studios, a dining hall, an outdoor playground and a chapel. Sports provision includes football, swimming, tennis, cross country, rounders, athletics and cricket, and there are clubs for coding, choir, gardening and book club. SEND support is available for pupils with moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, speech, language and communication needs, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment and autistic spectrum disorder. Parent View responses, based on 28 respondents, show a mixed picture: 57% would recommend the school, but 43% would not. Concerns were particularly high around SEND support, where 80% of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that the school gives SEND children the support they need. This school may suit families who value its Church of England ethos and local convenience, but those with children who have additional needs should investigate the SEND provision carefully.

The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
