About Shortlanesend School
Shortlanesend School is a mixed state primary in Cornwall that currently educates 156 pupils against a capacity of 210, meaning there is room to grow. The proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals stands at 17 per cent, which is worth noting in the context of the national average for primary schools. The school is clearly in demand: for the 2025/26 admissions round, it received 17 applications for just 12 places, giving an oversubscription ratio of 1.42. Nine of those applications were first-preference offers, and the school was officially oversubscribed. This suggests that local families are keen to secure a place here, despite the school not being at full capacity overall. The headteacher is Lisa McGinty, and the school has a nursery provision for children aged two and above, making it an option for families looking for continuity from early years through to Year 6.
Academically, the picture is mixed. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 assessments, 32 per cent of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, which is well below the Cornwall local authority average of 58 per cent. The school ranks 195th out of 208 primary schools in the county, placing it in the bottom 50 per cent nationally. Looking at individual subjects, 59 per cent met the expected standard in reading, 55 per cent in writing, and 50 per cent in maths. Higher-attaining pupils are scarce: just 5 per cent achieved the higher standard in maths, 23 per cent in reading, and none in writing or the combined measure. In its most recent Ofsted inspection in June 2025, the school retained a Good rating overall, though inspectors noted that early years provision requires improvement. Leadership and management, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and quality of education were all judged Good.
The school offers a range of facilities including a library, playing fields, dining hall, gymnasium, outdoor playground and a chapel. Sports provision covers cricket, football, swimming and rounders, while clubs include chess, choir and drama. SEND support is available for pupils with specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, speech, language and communication needs, and autistic spectrum disorder. Parent View responses from 47 respondents between September 2024 and September 2025 show some division: 55 per cent would recommend the school, but 45 per cent would not. While 83 per cent agreed or strongly agreed that their child is happy, only 56 per cent felt concerns are dealt with properly, and just 39 per cent agreed that SEND children receive the support they need. This school may suit families who value its community feel and nursery provision, but those prioritising strong academic outcomes or consistent SEND support may want to look more closely.

Catchment & Local Competition
No catchment data published for this school
The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
