Peel Brow School’s most recent Ofsted inspection in 2023 rated it Requires Improvement overall, a step down from the Good rating it held in 2016. The drop came despite several areas still being judged Good, including behaviour and attitudes, personal development, early years provision, and leadership and management. The sticking point was quality of education, which inspectors rated Requires Improvement. On the key academic metric for primary schools, the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined was 54 per cent. Digging into the 2023/24 KS2 results, the school’s strongest individual subject was reading, where 71 per cent of pupils met the expected standard and 21 per cent reached the higher standard. In writing, 63 per cent met the expected standard, though no pupils achieved the higher level. Maths saw 67 per cent at the expected standard and 8 per cent at the higher level. Average scaled scores were 103 in reading and 102 in maths, both just above the national benchmark of 100. The school’s overall ranking score of 54 reflects these mixed outcomes. While the school is not among the top performers in Bury, the data shows pockets of strength, particularly in reading, and the early years provision remains Good, which is a solid foundation for younger pupils.

Peel Brow is a small primary with 114 pupils against a capacity of 210, so there is plenty of space. It was oversubscribed for 2025/26 entry, with 15 applications for 10 places, and all ten first-preference applicants were offered a spot. The school has a nursery provision and a range of facilities including a sensory room, forest school, gymnasium and playing fields. Clubs cover gardening, drama, coding and choir, and sports include football, gymnastics, cricket, rounders and dance. SEND support is available for specific learning difficulties, speech and language needs, social and emotional mental health, and physical disabilities. With 41.9 per cent of pupils eligible for free school meals, the school serves a relatively disadvantaged catchment. It will suit families who value a broad extracurricular offer and a supportive SEND framework, and who are comfortable with a school that is working to improve its academic outcomes.
