About Otley Prince Henry's Grammar School Specialist Language College

If you're a parent in Leeds considering Otley Prince Henry's Grammar School, the first thing you'll notice is that it is a very popular choice. For the 2025/26 intake, the school received 945 applications for just 254 places, an oversubscription ratio of 3.72, meaning nearly four families applied for every spot. Of those, 302 put it as their first preference, and 251 of those families were offered a place. This level of demand is backed up by strong parent satisfaction. In the most recent Parent View survey, covering September 2024 to September 2025, 90% of the 258 respondents said they would recommend the school. Parents were particularly positive about the range of subjects and activities, with 95% agreeing there was a good range of subjects and 95% agreeing their child could take part in clubs and activities. A combined 88% of parents strongly agreed or agreed that their child is happy at the school.

Academically, the school performs well above the local average. Its Progress 8 score of 0.34 is significantly higher than the Leeds local authority average of 0.07, placing it 18th out of 50 secondary schools in the area and in the top 25% nationally. In English, the Progress 8 score was 0.15, while in maths it was a stronger 0.44, and the EBacc element scored 0.35. The Attainment 8 score was 53.4, and 83.5% of pupils achieved a grade 4 or above in English and maths. The school also has a strong EBacc focus, with 62.6% of pupils entered for the qualification and 45% achieving a grade 5 or above in it. At A-level, the school's value-added score was 0.03, with an average points per entry of 36.72, equivalent to a B- grade. The most recent Ofsted inspection in November 2024 judged the school Outstanding across all areas, including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management, a significant upgrade from its previous Good rating in 2013.

The school is a large, mixed secondary with a sixth form, housing 1,638 pupils against a capacity of 1,606. It offers a wide range of facilities, including a theatre, swimming pool, sports hall, astro turf, and a sixth form centre. There is a strong extracurricular programme with clubs ranging from coding and debate to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and rowing. For families with children who have special educational needs, the school lists provisions for a broad spectrum of needs, including autistic spectrum disorder, speech and language communication needs, and social, emotional and mental health support. However, it is worth noting that in the Parent View survey, only 59% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that SEND children get the support they need, with 33% disagreeing or strongly disagreeing. This is a school that clearly suits families who value strong academic outcomes, a wide choice of subjects and activities, and are prepared for a competitive admissions process.
