About Mere Green Primary School
Mere Green Primary School in Birmingham was rated Good in its most recent Ofsted inspection in 2025, but the detail tells a more interesting story. The school received Outstanding grades for early years provision, personal development, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management — four out of the five graded categories. The only area judged Good was quality of education. That pattern suggests a school where children feel safe and well supported, but where academic outcomes at Key Stage 2 are more mixed. In the 2023/24 academic year, 60 per cent of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined. That is slightly below the Birmingham local authority average of 63 per cent. The school ranks 157th out of 254 primary schools in the borough, placing it in the bottom half locally and the bottom 50 per cent nationally.
Looking more closely at the KS2 results, the picture is uneven across subjects. In reading, 74 per cent of pupils met the expected standard and the average score was 104. Maths was similar, with 74 per cent at expected and an average score of 105. But the proportion reaching the higher standard in reading was 29 per cent, compared with 31 per cent in maths, and just 11 per cent in writing. Only 9 per cent of pupils achieved the higher standard across all three subjects. Progress scores are not available in the data, so it is hard to say how much value the school adds from starting points. Parent feedback is very positive — 94 per cent would recommend the school, and 99 per cent agreed or strongly agreed that their child is happy there. Ofsted noted that personal development is Outstanding, and the school’s behaviour and attitudes also earned the top grade.
Mere Green is a state primary for children aged 3 to 11, with a nursery on site. It is oversubscribed: for 2025/26, there were 205 applications for 40 places, a ratio of over 5 to 1, and only 28 first-preference offers were made. The school has a range of facilities including a gymnasium, sensory room, ICT suite, art studios, library and a chapel. Sports on offer include dance, cross country, netball, swimming, cricket and tennis, and there are clubs for chess, choir and drama. The school supports children with a wide range of SEND needs, including dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, speech and language needs, hearing and visual impairments, and autistic spectrum disorder. With 13.4 per cent of pupils eligible for free school meals, the school serves a broadly representative intake. This is a school that suits families who prioritise personal development and a strong sense of community, and who are willing to navigate a competitive admissions process.
