About Markeaton Primary School

Parents at Markeaton Primary School are overwhelmingly positive about their experience, with 100% of respondents to the most recent Parent View survey saying they would recommend the school. The survey, which ran between September 2024 and September 2025 and gathered 110 responses, shows particularly strong satisfaction around pupil happiness and safety: 88% of parents strongly agreed that their child is happy at the school, and the same proportion strongly agreed that their child feels safe. Behaviour is another standout area, with 70% strongly agreeing that the school ensures pupils are well behaved. The school is clearly popular locally, too. For the 2025/26 intake, Markeaton received 153 applications for just 59 places, giving an oversubscription ratio of 2.59. Of the 73 first-preference applications, 56 were offered places, meaning that while competition is high, a first-preference application gives a reasonable chance of success.

Academically, Markeaton performs solidly above the local average. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 assessments, 68% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared with the Derby local authority average of 55%. That places the school 16th out of 58 primary schools in Derby, putting it in the top 50 nationally for this measure. Pupils also achieve well above the expected standard in individual subjects: 81% met the expected standard in reading, 80% in maths, and 76% in writing. At the higher standard, 25% of pupils achieved a high score in reading, 17% in maths, and 7% in writing. The average scaled scores were 106 in reading and 104 in maths. Ofsted’s most recent inspection in November 2024 rated the school Good overall, with Outstanding marks for personal development and for behaviour and attitudes, reflecting the strong culture noted by parents.

The school is well equipped to support a range of needs. Its SEND provisions cover specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, speech, language and communication needs, hearing impairment, and autistic spectrum disorder. In the Parent View survey, every parent who responded about SEND support agreed or strongly agreed that the school gives children the support they need. Facilities include a library, sports hall, playing fields, forest school area, and art studios, with clubs covering coding, science and art. Sports on offer include football, cricket, swimming and cross country. With 418 pupils against a capacity of 420, the school is essentially full, and 25.8% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is above the national average. Markeaton is a good fit for families who want a well-regarded, oversubscribed state primary with strong academic results and a clear focus on pupil wellbeing and behaviour.

No catchment data published for this school

The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.

⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
