About Lanesend Primary School
Lanesend Primary School sits within the Isle of Wight local authority, a small primary phase where just one of 36 schools holds an Outstanding Ofsted rating. The school currently ranks 31st out of 35 primary schools in the LA based on the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2. That places it behind local peers such as Wootton Community Primary School, Gurnard Primary School and Dover Park Primary School, all of which scored higher on the same ranking metric. Lanesend’s ranking score of 38 puts it in the bottom half of schools nationally, and in the bottom 50% of its region. The school is state-funded, mixed gender, non-religious, and serves children aged 4 to 11. Its headteacher is Alexander Augustus. With 391 pupils on roll against a capacity of 420, the school is not yet full, though it was oversubscribed for 2025/26 entry, receiving 67 applications for 43 places and making 41 first-preference offers.
Academically, Lanesend’s most recent Key Stage 2 results from 2023/24 show 38% of pupils reaching the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, well below the Isle of Wight LA average of 52%. Just 2% achieved the higher standard in all three subjects. In individual subjects, 72% met the expected standard in reading, 64% in maths, and 47% in writing. Average scaled scores were 104 in reading and 101 in maths. The school’s most recent Ofsted inspection took place in July 2025, where it was judged Good across all graded areas — quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. This marks a clear improvement from its previous inspection in September 2022, when the school was rated Requires Improvement overall, with quality of education, early years provision and leadership all graded as Requires Improvement. The 2025 inspection did not issue an overall effectiveness grade but noted Good in every category.
Lanesend offers a broad set of facilities including a Forest School, sports hall, ICT suite, art studios, playing fields and a chapel. Sports on offer include football, cricket, swimming, tennis and athletics, and clubs range from film and book clubs to drama, choir, science and gardening. The school has a substantial SEND provision, supporting pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, social emotional and mental health needs, speech language and communication needs, hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder. Parent View responses, collected between September 2024 and September 2025 from 105 respondents, show mixed feelings: 66% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that their child is happy, and 71% felt their child does well. However, only 46% would recommend the school to another parent, and concerns about how issues are handled were notable — 47% disagreed or strongly disagreed that concerns are dealt with properly. This is a school that has improved its Ofsted rating but still faces challenges around academic outcomes and parental confidence.

Catchment & Local Competition
No catchment data published for this school
The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
