About Hatfeild Primary School
Hatfeild Primary School in Merton has been rated Good across the board in its most recent Ofsted inspection, a significant improvement from its previous Requires Improvement rating. The inspection, which took place in January 2025, awarded Good marks for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. When it comes to academic outcomes at Key Stage 2, the picture is mixed. Half of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, which is below the Merton local authority average of 68%. The school ranks 37th out of 42 primary schools in the borough on this measure, placing it in the bottom half locally. However, individual subject scores tell a more nuanced story: pupils achieved an average reading score of 106 and an average maths score of 104, both above the national benchmark of 100.
Looking more closely at the 2023/24 exam results, 77% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading and 81% in maths, but only 58% did so in writing. At the higher standard, 29% of pupils achieved in reading, 15% in maths and 13% in writing, while just 8% hit the higher threshold across all three subjects. The school has no published progress scores for reading, writing or maths, so it is difficult to assess how much value it adds relative to pupils starting points. Nationally, Hatfeild ranks in the bottom 22% of primary schools for the combined expected standard metric. Parents responding to the Ofsted Parent View survey were largely positive: 92% agreed or strongly agreed their child is happy at the school, and 94% felt their child is safe. However, only 68% agreed the school has high expectations for their child, and 52% felt SEND children receive the support they need.
The school is a three-form entry primary with a nursery provision for children aged three and over, and it was oversubscribed for 2025/26 entry, receiving 69 applications for 25 places. Facilities include a Forest School area, playing fields, an outdoor playground, a library and a chapel. Sports on offer range from cricket and football to swimming and athletics, while clubs include film, art, coding, chess and choir. Hatfeild has a resourced provision and supports pupils with specific learning difficulties, speech and language needs, autistic spectrum disorder, physical disabilities and social, emotional and mental health needs. With 17% of pupils eligible for free school meals, the school serves a relatively diverse intake. This is a school that has turned around its Ofsted rating and offers a broad range of activities, but families prioritising top-tier academic outcomes in Merton may want to weigh the KS2 results carefully against local alternatives.
