About Handsworth Grange Community Sports College
Handsworth Grange Community Sports College is a mixed secondary school in the Sheffield local authority, serving pupils from ages 11 to 16. In the most recent ranking of Sheffield secondary schools by Progress 8 scores, it placed 22nd out of 29 schools, putting it in the bottom half of the local authority. For context, the top-performing schools in the area include High Storrs School, King Ecgbert School and Tapton School, all of which achieved significantly higher Progress 8 scores. The school has a capacity of 1,025 and currently has 992 pupils on roll, with 33.7 per cent eligible for free school meals, a figure well above the national average. Its most recent Ofsted inspection in June 2025 did not assign an overall effectiveness grade, but the school was rated Good for both behaviour and attitudes and personal development, while quality of education and leadership and management were both judged as Requires Improvement.
Academically, the school’s Progress 8 score for the 2023/24 academic year was -0.64, which is below the Sheffield local authority average of -0.4 and places the school in the ‘well below average’ national banding. Its Attainment 8 score was 39.7, and the proportion of pupils achieving a grade 5 or above in English and maths was 32.8 per cent, compared with 54.7 per cent at grade 4 or above. The EBacc average point score was 3.41, with 29.4 per cent of pupils entering the EBacc combination and 11.4 per cent achieving a grade 5 or above in it. The school does not have a sixth form, so pupils move on elsewhere after Year 11. In the Parent View survey, 53 per cent of respondents said they would recommend the school, though responses on specific areas were mixed: 53 per cent agreed their child was happy, but only 29 per cent agreed that concerns are dealt with properly.
The school offers a wide range of sports including rugby, netball, hockey, rowing and cricket, plus facilities such as an astro turf pitch, tennis courts, science labs and a chapel. There are also clubs covering debate, Model UN, coding, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and drama. For pupils with special educational needs, the school supports seven categories including autistic spectrum disorder, speech and language needs and social, emotional and mental health difficulties. However, in the Parent View survey, only 30 per cent of respondents agreed that SEND children receive the support they need, while 65 per cent disagreed. The school was oversubscribed for 2025/26 entry, with 419 applications for 202 places and 194 first-preference offers made from 202 first-preference applications. This suggests it remains a popular choice locally, particularly for families who value its sports provision and its recent improvements in behaviour and personal development.

The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.
⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
