About Brampton Primary School

Brampton Primary School is a state-funded, mixed primary school in Chesterfield, within the Derbyshire local authority. It ranks 213th out of 353 primary schools of the same type in the LA, placing it in the bottom half locally. The top-performing peers in the area — Wessington Primary School, Redhill Primary School, and Longford CofE Primary School — all achieved a perfect ranking score of 100, a significant contrast to Brampton's current position. The school is led by headteacher Samantha Spyve and caters for children aged 3 to 11, with a nursery provision on site. It has a capacity of 343 pupils and currently enrols 303, with 40.5% of pupils eligible for free school meals. The school is heavily oversubscribed: for the 2025/26 intake, it received 72 applications for just 23 places, all of which went to first-preference families, giving an oversubscription ratio of 3.13.

Academically, Brampton's most recent Ofsted inspection in January 2025 rated the school as Requires Improvement overall, a downgrade from its previous Good rating in 2015. The inspection found that the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management all require improvement, though early years provision and personal development were both rated Good. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 assessments, just 42% of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, well below the Derbyshire LA average of 59%. The school's average scores in reading (102) and maths (101) were close to the national baseline, but only 7% of pupils achieved a higher standard in reading and 9% in maths, with none reaching that level in writing. Progress measures were not available in the data, but the school's ranking places it in the bottom 50 nationally for KS2 outcomes.

Brampton offers a range of facilities including a gymnasium, art studios, library, forest school and chapel, with sports such as tennis, swimming, rounders, dance, cross country and athletics. Clubs include science, art and coding. The school has a broad SEND offer, with provisions for specific learning difficulties, moderate learning difficulties, social, emotional and mental health needs, speech and language communication needs, hearing impairment, physical disability, autistic spectrum disorder, and a resourced provision. Parent View responses from 21 families between September 2024 and September 2025 show that 76% would recommend the school, with strong majorities agreeing that their child is happy (86% strongly agree or agree) and feels safe (86%). However, only 62% agreed that concerns are dealt with properly, and 14% disagreed that the school makes them aware of what their child will learn. This school may suit families who value its strong SEND support and nursery provision, but who are aware of the current challenges around academic outcomes and behaviour.

No catchment data published for this school

The dashed grey ring is a generic 1-mile reference area — it's not an admission boundary. Real catchment depends on year, demand, and council criteria. We currently have real data for about 6% of UK schools and are actively expanding the database.

⚠ This school is oversubscribed — without published cutoff data we can't show how far places reach. Check your council's admissions page.
