About Avanti Gardens School

Avanti Gardens School in Bristol was rated Good in its most recent Ofsted inspection in February 2024, a significant turnaround from its previous Inadequate rating in 2018. The school now receives Good marks across all five inspected categories, including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. However, the school's academic outcomes tell a more complicated story. In the 2023/24 Key Stage 2 assessments, just 39% of pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined. That is well below the local authority average of 58% for primary schools in Bristol, and places Avanti Gardens at 77th out of 85 schools in the area. The school's national ranking for this combined measure sits in the bottom 10% of all primary schools in England.

Looking at individual subjects, the picture is mixed. Reading is a relative strength, with 70% of pupils meeting the expected standard and 35% achieving the higher standard. The average reading score of 105 is solid. But maths and writing both lag behind, with only 48% of pupils reaching the expected standard in each. The average maths score of 99 is below the national benchmark of 100. No pupils achieved the higher standard in either maths or writing. The school has a higher-than-average proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals at 14.1%, which may partly explain the lower attainment figures. The Ofsted report noted that behaviour and attitudes are Good, and inspectors found that pupils feel safe and happy at school. The early years provision is also rated Good, which is encouraging for families considering the nursery provision for children aged two and up.

The school is oversubscribed for the 2025/26 academic year, receiving 135 applications for 59 places, with 52 offers going to first-preference applicants. That gives an oversubscription ratio of 2.29 applicants per place. The school serves children from age 2 to 11 and has a capacity of 420, though current pupil numbers are 305. Facilities include a library, playing fields, a sensory room, ICT suite, sports hall, music rooms and an outdoor playground. Sports offered include football, cricket, swimming, athletics and tennis, and there are clubs for gardening, drama and eco club. The school has dedicated SEND provision for specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, social and emotional mental health needs, speech language and communication needs, and autistic spectrum disorder. This is a school that has made real progress in its leadership and culture, but parents should weigh the below-average academic outcomes against the strong pastoral and behavioural environment when deciding if it is the right fit for their child.
